Professor Doris M. Kakuru is an interdisciplinary social scientist and holds the position of Professor and Graduate Advisor at the School of Child and Youth Care, University of Victoria. She is an occupier on the land of the WSÁNEĆ people in Victoria, BC. Her research focuses on Childhood Sociology, feminist thought, and social justice, particularly addressing issues affecting children and youth in families and communities. Her work employs community-based participatory methodologies, informed by intersectionality and post-colonial theories.
Dr. Kakuru’s educational background includes a PhD in Social Sciences from Wageningen University (Netherlands), an MPhil in Social Anthropology from the University of Bergen (Norway), and a B.A. in Sociology from Makerere University (Uganda). Her scholarship spans violence in childhood, gendered children’s rights, adolescent health, urban poverty, and the social context of education and child labor.
Her research outputs emphasize practical and policy-oriented insights, such as navigating student motherhood in precarious urban settings, psychosocial experiences of HIV-positive women, and reconstructing child caregiving in marginalized contexts.
