Doreen Fraser is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at the University of Waterloo. She holds affiliate roles at the Rotman Institute of Philosophy and the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics. Her research focuses on the philosophy of physics, philosophy of science, and the historical development of physics, particularly exploring the role of applied mathematics and analogical reasoning in quantum field theory.
Her work examines how formal analogies between mathematical frameworks (e.g., Fock space, Feynman diagrams) in particle physics and condensed matter physics drove key 20th-century breakthroughs. She is authoring a book with Oxford University Press (OUP) on the implications of these methods for scientific realism and theory interpretation.
As Principal Investigator (PI) of the SSHRC Insight Grant-funded project, she investigates mid-level theoretical frameworks (e.g., spontaneous symmetry breaking) and their role in developing new theories in quantum gravity and particle physics.
Her research integrates historical analysis with foundational questions in physics, emphasizing the methodological lessons from mid-level frameworks for advancing theoretical physics.
