Dora Malech is a Professor and Editor in Chief of The Hopkins Review at Johns Hopkins University's Krieger School of Arts & Sciences. She holds a primary appointment in The Writing Seminars and oversees editorial initiatives for literary journals. Her academic career includes roles as director of the Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize and advisory board member for Writers in Baltimore Schools. Malech has received prestigious awards including the Ruth Lilly Poetry Fellowship and a Johns Hopkins Catalyst Award for early career faculty.
Her scholarly work focuses on contemporary poetry and translation, with five poetry collections and multiple editorial projects including The American Sonnet: An Anthology of Poems and Essays (2023). She has translated Italian poet Giovanna Cristina Vivinetto’s Dolore Minimo, which won the Malinda A. Markham Translation Prize. Her research explores formal innovation in poetry, intertextuality, and the intersections of visual art with literary expression.
Malech’s pedagogical contributions include a JHU Krieger School Excellence in Graduate Teaching Award and leadership in community-based learning initiatives. She has held residencies at the Civitella Ranieri Foundation and the American Academy in Rome. As editor of The Hopkins Review, she led a 15th-anniversary redesign earning the Phoenix Award for editorial excellence.
