Donna Rizzo is the Acting Chair and Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Vermont. She holds a Ph.D. in Civil & Environmental Engineering from UVM, an M.S. in Civil Engineering from UC Irvine, and degrees in Art and Archeology from the University of Florence and Civil Engineering (Honors College) from the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on computational tools, including artificial neural networks, to address human-induced changes in natural systems and improve decision-making in environmental management.
- Key areas: Multi-scale environmental problems, hydrology, disease risk prediction, and watershed classification.
- Co-founder of a Vermont business to accelerate technology adoption in environmental practice.
Her work spans computational approaches to bridge scour analysis, sediment dynamics, and Chagas disease vector studies. She has advised numerous Ph.D. and M.S. students and contributed to over 80 publications. Her teaching includes courses on hydraulics, environmental systems, and applied computational methods.
Publications highlight interdisciplinary collaborations in medical systems, hydrology, and environmental policy. Advising spans diverse fields like water quality, climate change, and palliative care communication. She co-leads the Watershed Field Camp, integrating geoscience and environmental engineering education.
