Donna Lee Bowen is a Professor of Political Science at Brigham Young University and an affiliated faculty member of the Women's Studies Program. She holds a BA in Political Science from the University of Utah, and an MA and PhD in Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago.
Her research focuses on family policy in the Middle East, with particular emphasis on intersections of Islam, state policies, and gender dynamics. Key works include her book Family Planning, Islam, and the State and co-edited volume Everyday Life in the Contemporary Middle East. Her influential articles address topics such as abortion policy in Islamic contexts and the relationship between family law inequity and violence against women.
Bowen has received recognition through the American Institute for Maghrib Studies Graduate Student Travel Award named in her honor. Her work bridges political science with gender studies, offering critical insights into Middle Eastern societies.
