Donald L. Walker, Jr. was the Director of the Conway School of Landscape Design from 1992 to 2005, succeeding founder Walter Cudnohufsky. He previously taught graduate and undergraduate courses in Landscape Architecture at the University of Illinois for 15 years and at Ball State University for two years. He held a Master of Fine Arts in Landscape Architecture and was a licensed landscape architect.
His career emphasized ecological design principles, advocating for design rooted in earth systems. He championed a hands-on, inquiry-based approach to education, encouraging students to explore site analysis deeply. His legacy includes establishing the school’s foundational focus on ecological harmony and the concept of 'landscape archi-detecture'—a method of uncovering clues in the land to inform design.
Don’s teaching methods, described as Socratic and rigorous, emphasized iterative processes over rigid structures. Colleagues noted his ability to inspire students through unconventional lessons, such as using a school van to demonstrate turning radii or requiring detailed sketches of park benches. He believed design projects were never truly finished and prioritized holistic site understanding over quick solutions.
His influence extended beyond teaching: he co-founded a native plant community around his home with landscape architect Ruth Parnall, embodying his commitment to ecological stewardship. The Conway School’s curriculum and alumni continue to reflect his philosophy of integrating design with environmental integrity.
