Donald Fishman serves as an Associate Professor and Assistant Chair within the Communication Department at Boston College, teaching core courses including Communication Law, Crisis Communication, History of Mass Communication, Public Relations, and Public Speaking from his office in St. Mary's Hall S454.
His research spans Communication Law, Crisis Communication, and historical analysis of mass media, with specialized focus on Libel Law, Parliamentary Procedure, Internet Communication, WWI Censorship, and Media Theory. Current projects include a monograph on legal developments in cyberspace for M.E. Sharpe, building on publications examining George Creel's WWI censorship practices and Marshall McLuhan's theoretical resurgence.
Scientific recognition includes:
- 1998 Haiman Award for Distinguished Scholarship in Freedom of Expression
- 2001 Phifer Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Parliamentary Procedure
- 2001 O'Neill Award for Top Paper in NCA's Freedom of Speech Commission
Professional leadership features his role as First Vice President-Elect of the Eastern Communication Association (ECA), chair of ECA's Task Force on Interest Groups, and vice-chair/planner for the Commission on Parliamentary Procedure's 2004 Miami meeting co-hosted with the NCA convention.
