Professor Donald Bates is a registered architect in Australia and the UK, and Chair of Architectural Design at the Melbourne School of Design, University of Melbourne. He directs LAB Architecture Studio, renowned for designing Melbourne’s award-winning Federation Square. His global practice spans projects in China, Singapore, UAE, Lebanon, and beyond, with works exhibited internationally and featured in over 50 publications.
Research focuses on innovative architecture, sustainable design, and urban development. He frequently serves on international design juries, including the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction (2014), and advises institutions like the American University of Beirut and RMIT University. He has held roles as an External Examiner at Hong Kong University and the Bartlett School of Architecture.
Prof. Bates has delivered over 140 lectures worldwide and contributed to media through interviews, radio, and television. His expertise bridges academic and professional realms, emphasizing architectural creativity and community impact.
