Giorgio Marfella

Dr Giorgio Marfella is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture and Construction at the University of Melbourne's Melbourne School of Design, where he has been a full-time academic since 2014. He coordinates core subjects in Architectural and Construction Technology for Master's programs in Architecture, Architectural Engineering, and Construction Management. His expertise spans tall building design, construction technology history, and the intersection of architectural innovation with materials science.

Marfella holds a PhD in Architecture from the University of Melbourne and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Florence. Prior to academia, he worked for over a decade in architectural practice, specializing in facade design for residential, commercial, and institutional projects globally. He is a registered architect in Victoria and actively collaborates with industry bodies like the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) and the Society for the History of Technology (SHOT).

His research focuses on techno-economic dynamics of tall buildings, sustainable material adoption (e.g., timber), and the historical legacy of architectural innovations. Recent work examines systemic risks in the architecture sector and the cultural implications of skyscrapers. He regularly contributes to public discourse through media interviews and conference speaking engagements.

Marfella’s publications span over two decades, analyzing topics such as glass industry impacts, tubular structural engineering, and the future of timber in high-rise construction. His affiliations include leadership roles in interdisciplinary research groups like ACAHUCH (Architecture, Construction & Heritage History Unit of the University of Melbourne).
