Dominique Van der Saag is a Lecturer in Animal Welfare Science and Animal Behaviour at the Sydney School of Veterinary Science, University of Sydney. She holds a BAnVetBioSc (Hons) and PhD. Her research focuses on improving farm animal welfare through innovative pain management strategies in livestock, particularly in surgical procedures like castration and dehorning. She is affiliated with the Sydney Environment Institute and Sydney Institute of Agriculture.
Research interests include pain relief delivery systems (e.g., medicated lick blocks), post-surgical welfare metrics, and livestock husbandry practices. Her work integrates veterinary science with biomedical engineering to address pain management challenges in extensive livestock industries.
Notable projects include a MLA-funded study on dehorning pain relief and a Re-entry Fellowship investigating sheep pain interventions. Media coverage highlights her work on pain relief lick blocks for cattle, featured in multiple agricultural publications and a YouTube video. Her research spans pharmacological studies, surgical pain assessment, and animal behavior analysis in livestock contexts.
Grants include MLA Project P.PSH.2019 (2022) and a Faculty of Science fellowship (2023). Her publications emphasize evidence-based strategies to enhance livestock welfare through novel analgesia methods and wound care innovations.
