Dominique Langin is a Professor at the University of Toulouse and Director of the Institute of Metabolic and Cardiovascular Diseases (I2MC). He co-leads the SPHERES project, funded by a 2019 European Research Council (ERC) Synergy Grant, alongside Bruno Antonny (CNRS) and Mikael Rydén (Karolinska Institute). The project focuses on understanding how lipid droplet dynamics in adipose cells contribute to cardiometabolic diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disorders.
- Collaboration: Combines expertise from Toulouse, Nice, and Sweden, with ~30 scientists and plans for additional doctoral/post-doctoral fellows.
The research addresses a critical societal challenge: the global rise of obesity-linked cardiometabolic diseases. By studying lipid droplets—the energy-storage structures in fat cells—Langin’s team aims to resolve unanswered questions about adipose cell dysfunction, including the biochemical and biophysical mechanisms behind lipid droplet enlargement and inter-individual variability.
- Scientific Impact: The project seeks to advance understanding of adipose tissue biology and its role in metabolic disorders.
Langin’s work integrates human and animal studies, lipid membrane biochemistry, and biophysics to explore the link between fat cell size and disease risk.
