Dominique Bregent-Heald is a Professor in the Department of History at Memorial University of Newfoundland. She holds a PhD from Duke University, MA from George Washington University, and BA from University of Toronto. Her research focuses on film history, tourism, imperialism, settler colonialism, and North American cultural history.
Bregent-Heald teaches courses on United States history, film history, and cultural studies. Her current research examines the interconnected histories of motion pictures and world's fairs during the international exhibition movement (1893-1964), investigating how film and expositions engaged in nation branding and served as sites of ethnographic representation. Additional research areas include comparative border studies through Hollywood cinema and film tourism in Canada.
Recent publications include monographs on Canadian tourism films and borderland cinema. Her work explores how tourism films shaped Canada's destination brand for American tourists and examines representations of North American borders in classical Hollywood cinema.
Bregent-Heald mentors graduate and honors students in film history, popular culture, American history, border studies, and tourism research.
