Dominic Aitken is a Lecturer in Criminal Law at Strathclyde Law School (University of Strathclyde) since August 2022. Previously, he held roles as a Lecturer in Criminology at the University of Bath (2020–22) and an Associate Lecturer at the University of Roehampton (2018–20). His research focuses on the history and politics of criminal justice and migration control, with emphases on coercive institutions like prisons and immigration removal centres (IRCs). His work has appeared in journals such as Punishment & Society and The British Journal of Criminology.
Education includes a DPhil (2015–2019) and MSc (2014–2015) in Criminology from the University of Oxford, where he won the Roger Hood Prize for top graduate. He also holds a Bachelor of Laws from the University of Edinburgh (2010–2014), where he earned the Lord President Cooper Memorial Prize for top undergraduate in Law. His doctoral research on deaths in custody was supported by an ESRC 1+3 Studentship.
Teaching responsibilities include undergraduate courses on criminal law, criminology, and evidence, plus a postgraduate module on the sociology of punishment. He has received the 2024 HaSS Teaching Excellence Award in the Early Career Category.
Research activities include peer-reviewed publications, conference participation (e.g., British Society of Criminology Annual Conference 2024), and organizing academic events. His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to education and social justice.
