Ambrose Y. K. Lee is a Senior Lecturer in Legal Theory at the Surrey Law School, University of Surrey. He holds a B.A. from the University of Hong Kong, an M.Litt. from the University of St Andrews, and a Ph.D. from the University of Stirling. Previously, he served as a Postdoctoral Research Officer for the AHRC-funded Preventive Justice Project at the University of Oxford, a Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellow at Oxford’s Centre for Criminology, and briefly lectured on metaethics at the University of Stirling.
His research focuses on philosophical issues in criminal justice, including punishment, criminalization, legal theory, and their intersections with political and moral philosophy. He has contributed to debates on retributive justice, communicative theories of punishment, and the moral prerequisites of criminal law. His recent book co-authored with Alex Sarch, The Moral Prerequisites of the Criminal Law (2023), examines the role of morality in criminalization.
Teaching responsibilities include Criminal Law II, Jurisprudence, Legal Obligation and Punishment. His research has been supported by grants such as the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowship (Internal Constraints to Coercive Harm Prevention) and AHRC funding (Preventive Justice Project).
