Doc Billingsley serves as Associate Professor of Anthropology within Elmira College's Division of Social & Behavioral Science, driving campus sustainability integration through academic and operational initiatives. His work bridges environmental anthropology with practical climate action.
Research focuses on environmental anthropology, sustainability implementation, climate justice education, and community documentary storytelling. He launched Elmira College's Sustainability Minor (January 2021) to develop student critical thinking about human-environment relationships and coordinates the Sustainability Scholarship program utilizing the Sustainability House for student-led renovation projects. His climate engagement includes organizing the Worldwide Climate Justice Teach-In (March 2022) with 400+ participants.
Community collaboration is central to his approach through partnerships with the Arts Council of the Southern Finger Lakes, MakersSpace at Steele Memorial Library, and Chemung County Historical Society, where he co-develops documentary workshops enabling community groups to share environmental narratives. These initiatives demonstrate applied anthropological methods for sustainability communication and community empowerment.
