Dirk Roland Haupt is a Researcher in Public International Law at the Department of Law, Faculty of Law, Lund University. His doctoral research project “Nuclear Nonproliferation: An International Law Study of Application Scenarios and Implementation Issues” (2017-2019) established his expertise in treaty law and nuclear security policy, with current work focusing on NATO law and Sweden’s geostrategic position.
Haupt’s research centers on Public International Law with specialized emphasis on Nuclear Nonproliferation frameworks, Treaty Implementation challenges, and International Security mechanisms. His work critically examines how international legal instruments function in real-world scenarios, particularly regarding nuclear weapons policy and buffer zone governance. Recent scholarship connects theoretical legal analysis with practical defense industry implications, reflecting his engagement with UN Sustainable Development Goals related to peace and justice.
Analysis of his 2021-2025 publications reveals consistent thematic focus on the strategic consequences of nuclear treaties, NATO’s legal architecture, and territorial conflict resolution. His scholarship demonstrates increasing policy relevance, with recent works addressing Sweden’s security vulnerabilities and the operational impact of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons on defense technology development.
Haupt received the Kungliga Krigsvetenskapsakademiens belöningsmedalj (Ingenio et Fortitudine – För snille och tapperhet) in 2014. His policy contributions include:
