Dirk Linke is a Professor in the Section for Genetics and Evolutionary Biology at the Department of Biosciences, University of Oslo. His research focuses on the structure and function of the bacterial cell surface using a comparative and interdisciplinary approach. He leads the Linke Group, which is part of the Centre for Integrative Microbial Evolution (CIME), studying phenomena such as adhesion, biofilm formation, and membrane transport processes in Gram-negative pathogens.
Dr. Linke's academic journey includes:
- Full Professor at University of Oslo since 2015
- Associate Professor at University of Oslo since 2013
- Habilitation at University of Tübingen (2010)
- Project Leader at Max Planck Institute for Developmental Biology (2007-2013)
- PhD in Chemistry from TU Berlin (2002)
His research spans bacterial adhesion mechanisms, membrane transport processes, and applications in vaccine development and diagnostics. The Linke Group employs comparative methods to study how closely related bacterial species interact differently with various hosts or surfaces, with particular focus on pathogens affecting both humans and fish. Their work bridges fundamental microbiology with practical applications through interdisciplinary approaches combining microbiology, structural biology, bioinformatics, and biophysics.
Dr. Linke's recent publication record demonstrates a strong trajectory in understanding bacterial surface proteins, with significant contributions to membrane protein folding, adhesion mechanisms, and applications in nanotechnology and dentistry. His work shows increasing translational impact, particularly in developing anti-adhesive approaches and diagnostic tools.
His scientific recognition includes:
- Young Academics Award from the German Society for Hygiene and Microbiology (2009)
- Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation scholarships (2008 and 2009)
As an academic leader, Dr. Linke serves on editorial boards for Molecular Microbiology (Wiley), Journal of Biological Chemistry, and Frontiers in Microbiology. His research has been consistently supported by major funding bodies including the Research Council of Norway (multiple projects), Horizon2020 (Marie Curie programs), and NIH sub-awards, reflecting the significance and quality of his work in microbial surface biology.
The Linke Group maintains active international collaborations with Nagoya University (Japan), University Hospital Frankfurt (Germany), Peking Union Medical College (China), and other institutions worldwide. Their laboratory is equipped with advanced instrumentation including plate readers, SPR, single-channel conductance (BLM setup), protein purification (FPLC), anaerobic chamber, and fermentation equipment, supporting their interdisciplinary research program.
