Dr. Dirk Blankenburg is a Research Associate and Scientific Director of the experimental operation at Erfurt University of Applied Sciences, where he is affiliated with the Landscape Architecture, Horticulture and Forestry school and the Horticulture department. His primary field of study is Fruit Growing, and he serves as Head of Test Operations and Member of the LGF Experimental Council.
Dr. Blankenburg was born in 1970 in Erfurt. He studied at the University of Applied Sciences Erfurt from 1991 to 1995, graduating as Dipl.-Ing. (FH) Horticulture. He completed his doctorate at the Faculty of Agriculture and Horticulture at the Humboldt University of Berlin from 1997 to 2002, graduating with a Dr. rer. hort.
Dr. Blankenburg's research focuses on plant nutrition, particularly sulfur and selenium nutrition in vegetable plants. His work examines how different nutrient supplies affect crop growth, quality, and nutritional value. He has conducted extensive research on sulfur fertilization, selenium enrichment in food, and the impact of various fertilization methods on vegetable production. His investigations cover multiple vegetable species including broccoli, lettuce, white cabbage, and Brassicaceae, with particular attention to how nutrient management influences both yield and phytochemical composition.
His publication record from 1999-2009 shows a consistent research trajectory focused on plant nutrition, evolving from basic investigations into sulfur nutrition to more applied studies examining the impact of nutrient supply on specific crop qualities and nutritional values. The research demonstrates practical applications for sustainable vegetable production and food quality improvement.
Dr. Blankenburg has supervised the experimental greenhouse and field test site at the university, providing essential infrastructure for horticultural research. His teaching responsibilities include courses in the Bachelor of Horticulture program such as Introduction to Fruit Growing, Fruit Growing, and Crop Production Seminars, as well as the Master Sustainable Crop Production program.
