Dr. Dirk Bald is an Assistant Professor at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam's Faculty of Science, affiliated with the Department of Molecular Cell Biology, AIMMS, and LaserLaB - Molecular Biophysics. His research focuses on bacterial energy metabolism and novel antibiotics, particularly targeting tuberculosis. He has coordinated a EU-funded Marie Curie Research Training Network (2006-2009) and collaborates internationally with academia and industry. He teaches courses including Protein Science and Biomolecular Science & Neuroscience.
Education: PhD in Biochemistry from University of Münster (Germany), postdoctoral research at Tokyo Institute of Technology (1995-2001) on ATP synthase. Research interests span antibiotic discovery, pathogenic bacterial metabolism, and membrane protein biochemistry. Recent studies highlight membrane transporter mechanisms, Mycobacterium responses to inhibitors, and ATP synthase targeting in pathogens.
His work contributes to UN Sustainable Development Goals related to health and innovation. Courses integrate cutting-edge research from AIMMS into curricula. Supervised 7 PhD theses, though student names are not listed here. No ancillary activities are disclosed.
