Diogo Almeida is a researcher at the Max Planck Institute for Empirical Aesthetics specializing in cognitive neuroscience and speech perception. His work focuses on how speech sounds are encoded in long-term memory, utilizing EEG methodology and the Mismatch Negativity paradigm.
His research examines fundamental questions about whether speech sound categories are densely or sparsely encoded in memory and whether they incorporate fine phonetic detail or abstract away from it. Dr. Almeida conducts cross-linguistic studies across diverse languages including English, Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin.
Working within the neuroscience framework at the institute, his laboratory investigates the neural mechanisms underlying speech processing and memory organization. His research employs electrophysiological methods to explore the cognitive architecture of speech representation across different linguistic systems.
