Professor Dimitris Charalampopoulos is a faculty member at the University of Reading, specializing in food biotechnology and sustainable food systems. His research focuses on valorizing food processing by-products, bioprocess development for microbial production of chemicals, and functional food ingredient synthesis. He has secured funding from the BBSRC, GCRF, Innovate UK, and industry partners, and has supervised over 20 PhD students to completion.
Academic Qualifications: BSc Chemistry (University of Crete), MSc Food Biotechnology (University of Patras & University of Ulster), PhD in Fermentation (UMIST). He currently serves as Senior Editor for Food Chemistry and Co-Director of the BBSRC Biomass Biorefinery Network.
Research Interests: Development of sustainable technologies to reduce food waste, enhance bioeconomy efficiency, and produce healthier foods through industrial biotechnology and enzymatic processes. Key areas include functional component extraction from side-streams, probiotic delivery systems, and prebiotic synthesis.
Grants & Funding: Multiple grants from UK and EU agencies, industry collaborations, and leadership in interdisciplinary networks. His work bridges lab-scale innovation with industrial application, emphasizing circular economy principles.
