Dietmar Schiersner is Professor of Medieval and Early Modern History and its Didactics at Pädagogische Hochschule Weingarten since 2006. He also serves as Scientific Director of the Fürstlich und Gräflich Fuggerschen Familien und Stiftungsarchivs in Dillingen since 2014. Schiersner is an ordinary member of the Kommission für geschichtliche Landeskunde in Baden-Württemberg and the Schwäbischen Forschungsgemeinschaft. His office hours for the summer semester 2025 are scheduled both in person and online, demonstrating his ongoing active engagement with students.
His academic background includes studies in History, Germanistics, and Latin Philology at the universities of Augsburg, Würzburg, and Munich. After working as a teacher at a Gymnasium for several years, he completed his doctorate in 2002 at the University of Augsburg with a dissertation on confessional formation in Vorderösterreich, followed by his habilitation in 2012 with a study on the cultural history of noble women's convents in the Early Modern period.
Schiersner's research focuses primarily on the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern period, with special emphasis on the history of the Oberschwaben region. His work spans historical theory and methodology, Habsburg territories, Imperial cities and the Reformation, Baroque and Catholic Enlightenment, nobility, and confessional cultures. He has developed expertise in women's history, particularly regarding noble women's convents in Swabia during the 18th century, and regional history methodology.
His publication pattern reveals deep engagement with the Fugger family's historical significance, regional religious developments, and the interplay between local and imperial structures. Recent works show increasing focus on medical history in the Augsburg region, knowledge transfer in Alpine regions, and the economic and social dimensions of the Fugger family's charitable foundations. His scholarship demonstrates methodological innovation through approaches like 'Mesogeschichte' - historical narratives bridging regional and imperial perspectives.
