Dieter Schönecker is Professor and Chair of Practical Philosophy at the Faculty of Philosophy, University of Siegen. He has held this position since January 2006 and has previously served as Associate Professor at Stonehill College and as a research assistant at the University of Halle-Wittenberg and the University of Bonn. He was also a Visiting Fellow and Lecturer at Yale University. His academic affiliations include membership in the editorial boards of International Yearbook of German Idealism and Erwägen – Wissen – Ethik, and he is actively involved in the Center for Commentary Interpretations on Kant (ZetKIK).

His research centers on practical philosophy, with a focus on Kantian ethics, metaethics, epistemology, philosophy of religion, and medical ethics. He is particularly known for his interpretive work on Kant’s Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals, co-authoring a major commentary with Allen W. Wood. His recent publications examine moral realism, dignity, freedom, and the intersection of religion and ethics. He has also contributed to debates on academic freedom, racism in Kant, and the ethics of Plantinga’s religious epistemology.
The most recent articles reflect a strong engagement with Kantian moral theory, theistic ethics, academic freedom, and moral psychology. His work bridges historical analysis and contemporary philosophical debate, particularly in the areas of moral realism, dignity, and the epistemology of religious belief.

Dieter Schönecker has supervised and collaborated with numerous researchers, including Elke Schmidt, Gregor Damschen, and Gregor Nickel. He has secured grants from the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the John Templeton Foundation, and the Catholic Academy in Berlin. He is also a liaison lecturer for the Academic Freedom Network, advocating for open academic discourse. He leads major research projects such as the Center for Commentary Interpretations on Kant, the Kant Math Project, and the translation and analysis of Alvin Plantinga’s Warranted Christian Belief.
Laboratories and Teams: He is a key figure in the Center for Commentary Interpretations on Kant (ZetKIK) at the University of Siegen and has organized the Siegen Kant Conferences. He collaborates internationally on Kantian scholarship and the philosophy of religion.
