Patrick Kain is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Purdue University and a founding faculty fellow in the Cornerstone Integrated Liberal Arts Program. His primary teaching responsibilities and scholarly interests are in ethics, the history of modern philosophy, and transformative texts.
Dr. Kain received his PhD from the University of Notre Dame and joined the Purdue faculty in 2000. His academic journey includes prestigious fellowships including the Humboldt Research Fellowship at Philipps-Universität Marburg, Germany in 2003 and the Alvin Plantinga Research Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame in 2018-19.
Professor Kain's research focuses on understanding the nature of moral obligation and the way that human nature and human dignity figure into the foundations of ethics, particularly in the work of Immanuel Kant (1724-1804) and in the Kantian tradition. His scholarship examines Kant's conception of anthropology, moral status, divine freedom, and practical reason. Kain has made significant contributions to debates about moral realism versus constructivism in Kant's ethics, Kant's position on animals, and the relationship between morality and religion. His extensive publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on Kantian philosophy with particular emphasis on ethics and moral theory.
His recent scholarly output reveals a deepening engagement with Kant's entire corpus, from the Groundwork to the Anthropology lectures. Works like 'Dignity and Self-Legislation' and 'Der Charakter der Gattung' demonstrate his expertise in Kant's value theory and anthropology, while 'The Development of Kant's Conception of Divine Freedom' shows his command of Kant's theological dimensions. His scholarship consistently bridges historical interpretation with contemporary philosophical concerns, particularly regarding moral status and animal ethics.
