Diego Rivera is an Associate Professor of Jazz Saxophone and Associate Director of Jazz Studies at Michigan State University's College of Music. A world-class musician, composer, and educator, he merges jazz with his Chicano heritage, creating a unique fusion of straight-ahead jazz and multicultural influences. His career spans over 20 years, with performances at prestigious venues globally and six critically acclaimed albums on labels like Posi-Tone. Rivera's research interests include ethnomusicology and the intersection of jazz with cultural identity, evident in albums like Indigenous and Mestizo, which explore themes of heritage, social justice, and global musical traditions.
Education: Began saxophone studies at Michigan State University under mentors like Rodney Whitaker, influenced by Detroit jazz legends like Yusef Lateef.
