Didier Stainier is a Professor at the Faculty of Biosciences, Goethe University Frankfurt/Main, and Director of the Department of Developmental Genetics at the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research since 2012. His career includes progressive faculty roles at the University of California, San Francisco (1995-2013), culminating in full Professor status.
- PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Harvard University (1990)
- B.A. Summa cum laude in Biology, Brandeis University (1984)
- Certificate in Biology, Université de Liège (1982)
- International Baccalaureate, Atlantic College (1981)
Dr. Stainier's research focuses on developmental genetics and organ formation in vertebrates, particularly cardiovascular development, liver and pancreatic development, and organ regeneration. He pioneered zebrafish as a model to study heart and endoderm development, with groundbreaking work on genetic compensation mechanisms and blood vessel formation.
His publications since 2000 reveal strong themes in developmental genetics, zebrafish biology, and organogenesis. Ten major publications (including 4 in Nature and 4 in Science) highlight his impact on understanding cardiac morphogenesis, sarcomere assembly, and endoderm specification through molecular pathways like Wnt and sphingosine 1-phosphate signaling.
Honors include:
- EMBO Membership (2016)
- ERC Advanced Grant (2016)
- NIH DEV1 Study Section Chair (2003-2006)
- AAAS Fellowship (2008)
- Outstanding Faculty Mentorship Award (2003)
Dr. Stainier has served on multiple scientific advisory committees and editorial boards, including as Co-Director of the Developmental and Stem Cell Biology Program at UCSF and as Managing Editor of Mechanisms of Development.
