Prof. Didier Grandjean is a Full Professor at the University of Geneva, affiliated with the Department of Psychology and Educational Sciences and the Swiss Center for Affective Sciences. He leads research on emotional processes, focusing on vocal communication, music perception, and developmental neuroscience. His work integrates neuroimaging, behavioral studies, and clinical insights to explore affective mechanisms in humans and non-human primates.
Education & Research: He earned his PhD in 2005 under Prof. Klaus Scherer, studying appraisal processes in emotional contexts. His lab investigates neural correlates of emotion perception, including vocal prosody, facial expressions, and music-evoked emotions. Collaborations span developmental psychology, neuroscience, and clinical studies in Parkinson’s disease and preterm infant care.
Research Themes: Key areas include: (1) Embodied Emotion—linking vocal production/resonance to emotional perception; (2) Early Development—effects of maternal vocal contact on preterm infants; (3) Cross-Species Communication—comparative studies of primate and human vocalizations. His work bridges cognitive, social, and clinical dimensions of emotion.
Recent Findings: Articles highlight maternal speech/music benefits for preterm infants, neural bases of vocal emotion recognition in Parkinson’s patients, and phylogenetic aspects of primate vocal affect perception. Ongoing projects explore autonomic responses to music and neonatal interventions.
Grants & Teams: Leads interdisciplinary projects on neonatal care interventions and affective neuroscience. Supervised over 30 graduate students, many focusing on developmental, clinical, or comparative aspects of emotion. Collaborates internationally on primate studies and neuroimaging.
