Diane Tom serves as Assistant Professor at Samuel Merritt University, teaching Masters and Doctorate of Occupational Therapy programs since 2021. A practicing occupational therapist since 1989, she holds dual board certification in pediatrics (AOTA) and assistive technology proficiency (RESNA ATP).
Her academic credentials include:
- BS in Occupational Therapy with Biological Science minor from San Jose State University (1988)
- MA in Special Education (physical disabilities emphasis) from San Francisco State University (1993), thesis: 'The Use of Assistive Devices with Augmentative Communication'
- Post-Professional OTD from University of Utah (2018), capstone: 'Assistive Technology in Early Childhood Occupational Therapy'
Dr. Tom's research centers on pediatric assistive technology applications, particularly augmentative communication systems for children with disabilities. She instructs graduate courses including Human Occupation throughout the Lifespan, Pediatric Community Participant Lab, and doctoral Capstone Development/Implementation. Dr. Tom advises doctoral candidates on capstone projects involving assistive technology solutions for pediatric populations, emphasizing real-world clinical application and evidence-based practice.
