Dr. Diane Shinberg is an Associate Professor of Sociology at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP), affiliated with the Department of School Psychology, Special Education, and Sociology within the College of Education and Human Services. She holds a PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her research focuses on health sociology, disabilities, gender, aging, and social inequalities, employing quantitative methods and multidisciplinary approaches.
Dr. Shinberg directs IUP’s multidisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Public Health program and has held leadership roles, including Membership Chair of the Disability and Society Section of the American Sociological Association (2018–2020), and Chair of IUP’s University-Wide Sabbatical Committee (2016–2017). She previously coordinated the Sociology MA Program (2012–2016).
Her teaching spans undergraduate and graduate courses, including Medical Sociology, Disability and Society, Sociology of Gender, and Public Health research methods. She has engaged in international academic collaborations, such as a 2024 trip to China for conferences at Shandong University and Zhejiang University, focusing on long-term care policies and aging.
Dr. Shinberg mentors students across programs and contributes to departmental service. Her work emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to health disparities, social welfare, and aging.
