Diana Abernethy, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Religion at Huntingdon College in Montgomery, AL. She joined the faculty in 2018 and specializes in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament with a focus on narrative analysis, theological interpretation, and the intersection of Bible and film.
- Education: Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible/Old Testament from Duke University; M.A. in Religious Studies from Duke; M.Div. and B.A. in Chemistry with a minor in Religion, both from Duke University.
Research Interests include the books of Samuel and Numbers, women in the Old Testament, violence in biblical texts, and the use of biblical themes in modern cinema. Her current project, Deceiving for David: Deceptions in Context (Oxford University Press), extends her focus on deception narratives.
Publications span topics like cinematic apocalyptic imagery (2024), theological readings of Jonathan’s legacy (2020), and ethical implications of biblical violence (2013). She actively presents at conferences such as the International Conference on Religion & Film and Society of Biblical Literature Annual Meeting.
- Scientific Awards: Dr. and Mrs. John N. Todd III Award for Teaching (2021), John Wesley Fellow (2010–2014), Duke Graduate School Conference Travel Grants, and others.
Ministry Experience includes ordained service in the United Methodist Church, leading Bible studies, and community engagement with organizations like Reality Ministries and Friends of L’Arche North Carolina.
