Dr. Deyu Li is an Assistant Professor in Geography of Digital Transitions at Utrecht University's Department of Human Geography and Spatial Planning, part of the Faculty of Geosciences. He holds an affiliation with the University of Cambridge Centre for Environment, Energy and Natural Resource Governance (CEENRG). His PhD in Innovation Studies from Utrecht University (2020) underpins his interdisciplinary research on complex social-technical transitions. Key research themes include digital/green technology diffusion, labor market impacts of innovation, and policy mixes for sustainable transitions.
He leads the Horizon Europe ST4TE project on equitable twin transitions and contributed to the EU PILLARS project analyzing automation's global value chain effects. Prior to Utrecht, he conducted postdoctoral research at CEENRG on wind energy innovation and energy technology spillovers funded by ESRC-NSF and Sloan Foundation grants.
His work spans 15+ peer-reviewed articles (2016–2025), focusing on regional development, renewable energy adoption, and policy effectiveness. He emphasizes systemic approaches to sustainability challenges, bridging micro-level innovation dynamics with macro-level societal transformations.
