معرفی
Desmond J. Tobin is a Professor of Cell Biology and Director of the Centre for Skin Sciences at the University of Bradford. His academic journey includes a BSc from the National University of Ireland (Maynooth), a PhD from the University of London (St. John’s Institute of Dermatology), and post-doctoral training at New York University Medical School’s Department of Dermatology.
His research spans the biology of human melanocytes and pigmentation, immune-based hair growth disorders, and advanced topics in skin science. He explores mechanisms such as POMC peptides in pigmentation, melanocyte aging, melanosome transfer, hair follicle mesenchyme interactions, alopecia areata, and bioinformatic approaches to skin burn assessment.
- Current Projects:
- Cellular and molecular control of melanin distribution
- Glucose metabolism in cutaneous fibroblasts
- Adipocyte roles in wound healing and radiotherapy-induced dermal remodeling
- Bioinformatic analysis of skin burns
Desmond collaborates with experts across disciplines, including Andrew Wilson (Archaeological Sciences) on forensic applications of hair fibers, and external leaders like Ralf Paus (University of Manchester) in dermatology research.
- Honors & Memberships:
- Fellow, Royal College of Pathologists
- Fellow, Royal Society of Biology
- Fellow and Vice-president, Institute of Trichologists
With over 140 publications and an H-index of 53, Tobin's work bridges basic and applied skin/hair science, emphasizing translational research and interdisciplinary innovation.
