Dr. Desiree Kawabata is a Scholarly Teaching Fellow specializing in ELEC/TESOL at Griffith University's School of Humanities, Languages and Social Science. She holds a PhD and Master's in Applied Linguistics from Griffith University, a Graduate Certificate in TESOL, and a Bachelor of Arts in Asian Studies and Political Science.
Her research explores:
- Systemic-functional linguistic frameworks for language assessment
- Validation models for oral proficiency testing
- Cross-cultural communication competence
- Japanese linguistic structures and pedagogy
- Sociolinguistic dimensions of language learning
Publications center on coherence metrics in oral proficiency assessment, applying systemic-functional linguistics to improve testing methodologies. Recent work focuses on enhancing assessment literacy through linguistic analysis.
As Program Director for the Diploma of Languages, she oversees curriculum development and instructional design for language programs.
