Derek Thompson is a Professor of Mathematics in the Mathematics Department of the School of Natural and Applied Sciences at Taylor University. He holds a PhD in Mathematics from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, an MA from Ball State University, and a BS from Indiana Wesleyan University.
His research focuses on Functional Analysis and Operator Theory, with specialization in Composition Operators. He also actively explores Mathematics Education and Technology for Education, authoring approximately 20 research articles and several teaching-focused publications. Thompson emphasizes collaborative student research, resulting in numerous national award-winning presentations.
Thompson's scientific recognition includes:
- 2023 Indiana MAA Distinguished Teaching Award
- 2019 Dr. Joe Burnworth Teaching Award
- 2017 School of Natural and Applied Sciences (SNAS) Distinguished Lecturer
He has mentored award-winning students across multiple national competitions, including Joint Mathematics Meetings, MathFest, and the Indiana College Mathematics Competition. Beyond research, Thompson advises undergraduate teams that have secured first-place finishes in the MATH Challenge and regional mathematics contests.
