معرفی
Professor Derek Leinweber is a leading theoretical physicist at the University of Adelaide, affiliated with the School of Physics, Chemistry and Earth Sciences under the Faculty of Sciences, Engineering and Technology. With over 383 refereed publications and an h-index of 70, his work centers on first-principles supercomputer simulations of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory governing strong interactions between quarks and gluons.
His research has revolutionized understanding of QCD vacuum structure by demonstrating how center vortices confine quarks and generate mass. Notable discoveries include resolving the Roper resonance as a dynamically generated state, overturning decades of quark-model assumptions, and establishing meson-baryon bound states via lattice QCD calculations. He combines these findings with nonperturbative effective field theory to bridge theoretical predictions with experimental measurements.
His scientific contributions were highlighted in Nobel laureate Frank Wilczek’s 2004 lecture. As a pioneer, he chairs international symposia like Lattice 2012 and serves on the IUPAP C20 Commission for Computational Physics. A passionate educator, he received the Executive Dean of Sciences Prize for Excellence in Teaching and was twice shortlisted for Science Educator of the Year in South Australia.
Scientific Awards:
- 2007 Australian Institute of Physics Walter Boas Medal
- Twice finalist, South Australian Science Excellence Awards (Science Educator of the Year)
- Executive Dean of Sciences Prize for Excellence in Teaching
Research Leadership: He founded the Visualization branch of the South Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing (SAPAC) and currently serves as Associate Director of the ARC Special Research Centre for the Subatomic Structure of Matter. His research group advances lattice QCD techniques and explores QCD’s role in matter’s fundamental structure.
