Prof Derek Hand serves as Executive Dean of the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences at Dublin City University. A leading scholar in Irish literary studies, he specializes in modernist literature, postcolonial contexts, and 20th-century Irish fiction. His research explores themes such as colonial identity, narrative form, and cultural critique through authors like Elizabeth Bowen, John Banville, and Benedict Kiely. He holds a professorial position and has published extensively on Irish literary history, modernism, and the socio-political dimensions of Irish literature. Contactable at derek.hand@dcu.ie, he is based at Glasnevin Campus, Room C201.
Hand’s academic work spans over three decades, with a focus on reconstructing Irish literary traditions through close textual analysis. His publications analyze the interplay between historical events and literary expression, particularly in works addressing the Celtic Tiger era, the Anglo-Irish Big House tradition, and postcolonial identity formation. He frequently engages with contemporary debates on Irish fiction’s role in reflecting national consciousness and socio-economic shifts.
His recent research emphasizes modernist epic forms, the dialogue between Irish and global literary movements, and the evolution of narrative techniques in response to cultural upheavals. While no specific grants or awards are listed, his scholarly contributions have shaped discussions in Irish Studies through rigorous analysis of lesser-explored texts and authors.
