Maria LIU McGarrity is a Professor of English in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at Long Island University, with a cross-appointment as an Associate Member of the Seminar in Irish Studies at Columbia University. She holds a B.A. from Rutgers University, an M.A. from the University of New Orleans, and a Ph.D. from the University of Miami.
Her research specializes in the intersections of British, Irish, and Caribbean literatures, examining postcolonial theory, transnational dynamics, and the role of geography in shaping an "island imaginary." She focuses on literary modernism, colonial legacies, and transatlantic cultural exchanges, particularly exploring how diasporic connections redefine identities across the North Atlantic and beyond.
McGarrity's publications consistently analyze linkages between Irish and Caribbean narratives, with recurring themes of geography as metaphor, postcolonial resistance, and modernist reinterpretations of history. Her work often centers on authors like James Joyce and Derek Walcott, dissecting themes of displacement, cultural hybridity, and colonial critique across poetry, fiction, and film.
