Patrick Bixby is a Professor of English at Arizona State University’s School of Humanities, Arts and Cultural Studies, affiliated with ASU Global and the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts and Sciences. His research bridges mobility studies, modernist studies, Irish studies, postcolonial theory, and continental philosophy. He explores themes of cultural identity, migration, and literary history through works like License to Travel: A Cultural History of the Passport (2022) and Nietzsche and Irish Modernism (2022). His articles analyze Beckett’s vagrants, Joyce’s Nietzschean influences, and the ethical dimensions of literary form.
His teaching spans modernist literature, film history, and interdisciplinary research methods. Recent scholarship emphasizes the passport’s geopolitical significance, the transnational circulation of ideas, and the intersection of disability aesthetics with modernist forms. Bixby’s work often highlights marginalized voices and the socio-political underpinnings of cultural production.
Notable contributions include co-editing A History of Irish Modernism (2019) and critical editions of Standish O’Grady’s writings. His research bridges historical analysis with contemporary debates on migration, nationalism, and ethical witnessing. Bixby’s interdisciplinary approach underscores the interconnectedness of literature, philosophy, and global cultural dynamics.
