معرفی
Derek Gingerich serves as Professor and Department Chair in the Department of Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire's College of Arts and Sciences. With over two decades of academic service, he teaches foundational courses like BIOL221 Foundations of Biology I and advanced topics including Molecular and Cell Biology, while mentoring more than forty student researchers.
His educational journey includes a B.S. in Biology and Biochemistry from Eastern Mennonite University (1996) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry, Molecular, and Cell Biology from Cornell University (2002), followed by postdoctoral research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Gingerich's research centers on plant molecular genetics and bioinformatics, investigating BTB/CUL3 E3 ubiquitin-ligase evolution, plant light response pathways, and human genetic variants in disease. His work bridges molecular mechanisms with computational approaches to unravel selective protein degradation in plants.
Analysis of his 11 publications reveals consistent focus on ubiquitin-mediated protein degradation systems across plant species, with evolutionary studies in rice and functional analyses in Arabidopsis dominating his output. Key trends include molecular characterization of E3 ligases, phytochrome signaling mechanisms, and seed germination regulation.
His scholarly recognition includes:
- UWEC Biology Department Vic and Eileen Cvancara Outstanding Teacher Award (2019)
- UWEC College of Arts and Sciences Exemplary Colleague Award (2023)
As a dedicated mentor, he has guided over forty students through research projects, fostering skills in molecular genetics and bioinformatics. His leadership extends to co-founding the Primarily Undergraduate Institutions section of the American Society of Plant Biologists.
Dr. Gingerich currently spearheads a collaborative network promoting interaction among PUI faculty in plant sciences, facilitating resource sharing and joint research initiatives across undergraduate institutions.
