Dennis M. Kratz serves as the Ignacy and Celina Rockover Professor, Director of the Center for Asian Studies, and Senior Associate Provost at The University of Texas at Dallas, where he is central to the Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology. A transformative academic leader, he pioneered interdisciplinary initiatives bridging humanities with technology and earned recognition for innovative teaching and program development.
His academic foundation includes a doctorate in medieval Latin from Harvard University. Prior to UT Dallas, he held faculty positions at Simmons College and Ohio State University, establishing his expertise in classical scholarship before transitioning to academic leadership.
Kratz's research synthesizes medieval literature, heroic archetypes, and modern speculative genres, examining epic poetry traditions from Alexander the Great to contemporary fantasy. His work uniquely connects historical literary analysis with emerging media, emphasizing how technological evolution reshapes narrative forms and cultural values across eras.
His accolades include the prestigious UT System Chancellor’s Council Award for Outstanding Teaching (1992) and a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. He further demonstrates scholarly impact through his 45-year tenure as co-editor of Translation Review and leadership as former president of the American Literary Translators Association.
As an administrator, Kratz engineered foundational programs including Arts and Technology (ATEC) and Emerging Media and Communication (EMAC), while establishing the Center for Values in Medicine, Science and Technology. His leadership cultivates environments where critical humanities discourse actively engages with scientific and technological advancement.
