Dennis Clougherty is a Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Vermont, within the College of Engineering and Mathematical Sciences. He specializes in theoretical condensed matter physics, focusing on topics such as high Tc superconductivity, magnetism, quantum sticking, density functional theory, fullerenes and nanotubes, and Berry-phase effects in condensed matter systems.
Dr. Clougherty holds S.B. degrees in Physics and Electrical Engineering, an S.M. in Electrical Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Physics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of California-Santa Barbara and has held visiting appointments at MIT, UC San Diego, Harvard University, the University of Texas at Austin, and the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara.
His research explores cutting-edge phenomena in materials science and quantum mechanics, including the electronic properties of novel materials like fullerenes and nanotubes, phase transitions, and the interplay between topology and electronic structure. His work bridges theoretical models with computational simulations to advance understanding of complex condensed matter systems.
Clougherty’s academic contributions span over three decades, with publications in premier journals like Physical Review Letters and Nature Materials. His research themes demonstrate a consistent focus on interdisciplinary approaches to solving fundamental problems in materials physics.
