Dr. Dennis C. Wendt is an Associate Professor in the Department of Educational and Counselling Psychology at McGill University and holds the William Dawson Scholar title. He directs the Cultural and Indigenous Research in Counselling Psychology (CIRC) lab and is an Associate Member of the Department of Psychiatry’s Division of Social and Transcultural Psychiatry. His roles include President of the Association of McGill Professors of Education (AMPE) and a Junior 1 Research Scholar (Chercheur boursier) with the Fonds de recherche du Québec: Santé (FRQS).
He earned his PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Michigan (2015), followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington’s Addictions, Drug & Alcohol Institute. His research focuses on Indigenous mental health, substance use treatment, and culturally relevant interventions, with over 50 peer-reviewed publications. Key collaborations include institutions like Harvard, Yale, and the Indigenous Working Group of Quebec-Atlantic Node of CRISM.
Research interests include Indigenous Peoples’ mental health, evidence-based practice adaptations, qualitative methodologies, and theoretical psychology. His work emphasizes decolonizing frameworks, trauma-informed care, and community partnerships. Recent grants include CIHR and SSHRC funding for projects addressing substance use disparities and pandemic impacts on Indigenous communities.
