Professor Denise Robertson is a Reader in Nutritional Physiology at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences, specializing in metabolic health, diabetes prevention, and dietary interventions. She holds a BSc and PhD, and is a Registered Nutritionist (RNutr). Her research focuses on insulin resistance, gastrointestinal physiology, and the metabolic effects of sleep and diet. She coordinates undergraduate/postgraduate research projects and teaches modules like BMS3076 and BMSM013. She collaborates with Prof Jon Swann (Imperial College London/Southampton) and serves as Deputy Editor of the British Journal of Nutrition and an ILSI Expert Group member.
Key research areas include the metabolic impacts of dietary fiber, resistant starch, and postprandial carbohydrate metabolism. She investigates time-restricted eating, gut permeability in diabetes, and cholesterol dynamics after dietary fat substitution. Her work bridges clinical nutrition and physiological mechanisms, with applications in chronic disease prevention.
Publications span metabolic adaptations following surgery, vitamin D in multi-ethnic populations, and the effects of food preparation on glycemic responses. She advocates for evidence-based nutritional strategies and contributes to interdisciplinary collaborations to advance metabolic health research.
