Denise Murphy is an Assistant Professor of Dance and Director of the Dance Program at the University of Delaware, housed within the College of Arts & Sciences. Her academic and artistic work bridges choreography, dance education, and the exploration of personal histories in performance. She holds an MFA in Choreography from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) and a BS in Dance Education from New York University.
Her research focuses on the intersection of dance and personal narratives, supported by grants such as the Library Research Grant from Barnard College. She has choreographed works like Vanishing Souls | Falling Embers, which earned her the Outstanding Achievement in Choreography award at the Kennedy Center. Denise teaches technique and theory courses and has presented her work at conferences including ACDA and NDEO.
As a performer, she has collaborated with notable choreographers and is a former member of IsadoraNow, dedicated to preserving Isadora Duncan’s legacy. Her career includes teaching roles at institutions like the Ailey School and High Point University.
