Denise Monti serves as a Lecturer in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Science Education Alliance-Phage Hunters Advancing Genomics and Evolutionary Science (SEA-PHAGES) program. She has been Primary Instructor for 11 course sections between 2015-2023, teaching both in situ (phage discovery/microbiology) and in silico (bioinformatics/genomics) components of the curriculum.
Her research focuses on bacteriophage genomics and microbial evolution, utilizing hosts including Corynebacterium xerosis, C. glutamicum, C. vitaeruminis, and Gordonia rubripertincta. She specializes in undergraduate research integration, having instructed 179+ students across freshman-heavy cohorts with class sizes of 11-20 students per section.
As part of HHMI's national SEA network, she participates in program workshops and symposia including the 2025 Phage Genomics Workshop and 2026 SEA Symposium. Her teaching spans courses BY213 (Fall terms 2015-2023), BY214 (Spring terms 2015-2019), BSC1010C (Fall 2023), and IDS1932 (Fall 2023), maintaining consistent 6-hour/week laboratory instruction formats.
