Denise Kripper is an Associate Professor of Spanish in the Modern Languages and Literatures department at Lake Forest College. She specializes in Translation theory, Transatlantic studies, and Contemporary Latin American literature. Her academic background includes a PhD and MA from Georgetown University, a Diploma from the European College of Liberal Arts (Berlin, Germany), and a BA from Lenguas Vivas Juan Ramón Fernández in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Her research focuses on the intersection of translation studies and postcolonial theory, particularly exploring how translation practices reflect power dynamics in historical and contemporary contexts. She has published extensively on fictional representations of translators in Latin American literature, including monographs such as Narratives of Mistranslation (2023) and edited volumes like The Routledge Handbook of Latin American Literary Translation (2023). Her work bridges literary analysis with pedagogical innovation, especially in teaching translation studies through a global humanities framework.
Recent scholarship emphasizes decolonial approaches to translation, examining how marginalized voices are mediated through translational practices. She has also contributed to public-facing translation projects, including translating contemporary Argentine and Colombian literature into English. Her courses include Intro to Translation Studies, Contemporary Latin American Literature in English, and Women’s Voices in Latin America.
Dr. Kripper’s professional activities include academic service within Lake Forest College’s Modern Languages department and participation in international translation networks. She actively engages with Chicago’s cultural institutions, collaborating on translation initiatives that connect academic research with community education.
