Denise Humphreys Bebbington is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Sustainability and Social Justice at Clark University, USA, previously known as the International Development, Community, and Environment (IDCE) program. She co-directs the Center for the Study of Natural Resources Extraction and Society (Extractives@Clark) and formerly led the Women’s and Gender Studies Program. Her research focuses on the political ecology of natural resource extraction, socio-environmental conflicts, and gender equity in Latin America, particularly Bolivia and Peru. She has held roles with organizations like the Inter-American Foundation and Catholic Relief Services.
Dr. Bebbington holds a Ph.D. in Development Policy and Management from the University of Manchester (2010), an M.S. in Development Management from American University (1986), and a B.A. in History from UC Berkeley (1981). Her work examines how extractive industries and infrastructure projects intersect with territorial rights, gender dynamics, and environmental sustainability.
Her research highlights the impacts of natural gas development on Indigenous communities in Bolivia, the governance of extractive industries, and the role of socio-environmental movements. She emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to understanding resource conflicts and advocating for equitable development strategies.
