Denise Amy Baxter is a Professor of Art History at the University of North Texas, holding roles such as Art History Program Coordinator, Department Chair, and former Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the College of Visual Arts and Design. She earned her undergraduate degree from Vassar College, with M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Her research focuses on visual arts, material culture, fashion, and the construction of the modern self in 18th- and 19th-century France. She contributed to major publications like A Cultural History of Dress and Fashion in the Age of Empire (2017) and co-edited Architectural Space in Eighteenth-Century Europe (2010). Baxter has led administrative projects, including overseeing a $70 million campus construction and renovation project from 2015–2019. She actively participates in professional organizations like the College Art Association (CAA) and serves on editorial boards for Dress (Costume Society of America journal).
Her work bridges scholarly research with public engagement, including roles in pedagogy and art historical methodologies. She currently serves as President of the CAA Board of Directors (2024–2026).
