Associate Professor Denis Collins is the Deputy Head of the School of Music at the University of Queensland. He holds a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Arts from University College Dublin, and MA and PhD degrees in Musicology from Stanford University as a Fulbright Scholar. His research focuses on counterpoint and canon in Western art music from the late Middle Ages to J.S. Bach, with contributions to digital musicology, music iconography, and cognition. Collins has led two Australian Research Council (ARC) Discovery Projects and was an Associate Investigator at the ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions. He teaches courses in musicianship, counterpoint, and music history, and supervises postgraduate students in related fields.
Collins is Editor-in-Chief of Musicology Australia and co-founder of the Canons Database (www.canons.org.au), a resource for musical canons. His work bridges historical and modern approaches to music analysis, emphasizing interdisciplinary methods. Key research themes include canonic techniques in medieval and Renaissance music, the legacy of Sergei Taneyev, and the application of digital tools to musicology.
His recent publications include studies on Elway Bevin and Giovanni Maria Nanino’s riddle canons, canonic works in Rome, and Zelenka’s contrapuntal techniques. He has also contributed to international journals and conferences, addressing topics like Bach’s counterpoint and early music pedagogy.
