Denis Bocquet

Denis Bocquet is a Professor of History and Theories of Architecture and the City at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Strasbourg (ENSAS), part of the University of Strasbourg. He has been with ENSAS since 2014 after previously teaching at École Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées (2003-2007 and 2011-2014). Bocquet also serves as a teacher of urban theory and history of urbanism at the Technical University of Berlin, where he has lived since 2004.

His research focuses on the history of urban planning in Europe and the Mediterranean, contemporary cities in Europe, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia, with special emphasis on the relationship between urban infrastructural transformations and urban ideology. His primary geographical research areas include Berlin, Dresden, Greater Paris, Rome, and Singapore. Bocquet has published extensively on these topics, including monographs such as 'Rome, a city of technology (1870-1925)' and 'Sociologie de Berlin' (co-authored with Pascale Laborier).

His recent publications reveal a continued focus on urban transformations, with articles examining global cities, urban reconstruction processes, urban mobility, and energy-territory relationships. The research demonstrates a consistent interest in how technical urban systems intersect with political and social dimensions of city development across different historical periods and geographical contexts.
